Obama wants Israel to hold parallel talks with Palestinians and Syria

The Obama administration is preparing a Middle East peace process that will include simultaneous bilateral talks between Israel and the Palestinians, and between Israel and Syria. The plan is based on the Arab peace initiative that offers establishing normal relations between Israel and Arab League states in exchange for withdrawing from the occupied territories and establishing a Palestinian state.

The United States will put together a “security package,” including demilitarization of the territories from which Israel will withdraw and the option of stationing a multinational force in them for years.

Arab League chief: Israel’s policies border on ‘madness’

“The deliberate targeting of civilians is just one example of how the Israeli military’s ideology is nearing madness,” Mussa said.

The Arab League’s secretary general further called for Israeli soldiers to be held accountable for what he said were war crimes committed during Israel’s 22-day offensive in the Gaza Strip in late December and January.

Assad: Israel’s new government is against peace

Assad underlined the need for continued resistance, a reference to anti-Israeli militant groups like the Palestinian Hamas, which Damascus supports.

“Resistance is a national and patriotic and moral duty and it is the only option,” he said. “Peace cannot be achieved with an enemy who does not believe in peace without it being imposed on him by resistance.”

Arab League tells Israel: Accept Saudi initiative now or never

MK Ahmed Tibi (United Arab List-Ta’al) will be attending meetings associated with the summit. Speaking by phone from Doha, he told Haaretz that he had met with officials from Yemen and other Gulf countries. “My opinion, which is what I represent here, is that the international community must force Israel to accept the two-state solution and work to establish a Palestinian state, and if not, a diplomatic price should be paid,” Tibi said.
