Abbas orders the release of 200 political prisoners

Maan added that Abbas told Egyptian security officials who visited Ramallah recently that “Fateh movement agrees to all of the demands of Hamas under the condition that Hamas agrees to presidential and legislative elections in 2010”. 

The statements of Abbas surprised the Egyptian team who immediately headed to Damascus to hold talks with Hamas’ political bureau leader, Khalid Mashal, to listen to his response.

Report: Mash’al set to axe politbureau in Damascus in favor of committee of West Bank, Gaza, exiled members

The paper’s sources said Mash’al decided to axe the political bureau, seen by many as the command center for Hamas, in favor of an executive committee made up of 18 leaders, six from abroad, six from Gaza and six from the West Bank. The move would ensure that no one wing of the party would control internal decision making.

Mashal to British MPs: “If we find another way to end the occupation – we’ll use it”

During the videoconference Mashal stressed the necessity of pressuring Israel to put an end to its occupation of the West Bank and its siege on Gaza. He explained that “if we [Palestinians] find another way to end the occupation – we will use it,” but noted that all efforts to seek help from the international community had failed.

The Hamas leader stressed the party position that it will recognize Israel when it withdraws to the 1967 borders, and reiterated that any settlement between the sides will necessarily include such a proviso.
