Palestinian refugees protest Nahr al-Bared delay

Posted in 1 by beyondtheborder on September 1, 2009

Hundreds of Palestinian refugees staged a protest at the northern camp of Nahr al-Bared on Monday to oppose the government’s decision to delay the camp’s reconstruction. Protesters raised banners and called the Lebanese government, Palestinian factions and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency to expedite the process of reconstruction. The Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) also protected the delay saying the refugees of Nahr al-Bared were shocked to hear about the slow-down of reconstruction. “This shows that someone is standing in the way of our people’s interests and covering their actions with false excuses” the DFLP said. It has been reported that the delay could be due to the discovery of Roman ruins underneath the camp site, which was reduced to rubble in 2007 following clashes between the Lebanese Army and the Al-Qaeda inspired Fatah al-Islam militant group.
