One fighter killed two injured, Israeli jeep destroyed in central Strip clashes

One witness said Palestinian fighters were able to destroy an Israeli military jeep after targeting the troops with a missile, likely the source of the explosion.

Other eyewitnesses reported seeing Israeli helicopters fire on homes in Al-Musadder, east of Al-Maghazi Camp shortly after hearing an explosion. They also reported hearing violent clashes at the border area.

No Palestinian group immediately claimed the dead and wounded militants as its members. But Hamas, the Islamic group that has ruled the territory since 2007, sent a text message to reporters saying the group’s fighters fired 18 mortar shells at the Israeli troops in the vicinity of the clash.

‘Gaza is the problem,’ Levy Eshkol, then prime minister of Israel, said in June 1967. ‘I was there in 1956 and saw venomous snakes walking in the street. We should settle some of them in the Sinai, and hopefully the others will immigrate.’ Eshkol was discussing the fate of the newly occupied territories: he and his cabinet wanted the Gaza Strip, but not the people living in it.
